The present paper deals with a multilayer slab waveguide structure for sensor applications. We assume a four layer slab waveguide structure with one of these layers made of a left-handed material (LHM) of negative permittivity (ε) and permeability (μ). Using the Fresnel reflection coefficients, the reflectance of the structure is studied in details. The sensitivity of the effective refractive index to variations in the refractive index of a measurand homogeneously distributed in the cladding layer is also presented.
