Determination of Anionic Surfactants in Industrial Effluents Using a New Highly Sensitive Surfactant-Selective Sensor

Abstract:

A new simple, sensitive and inexpensive surfactant sensor based on 1,3-didecyl-2-methylimidazolium-tetraphenylborate (DMI-TPB) as the sensing complex was used for end-point detection during potentiometric titration of anionic surfactants in industrial effluents. Low levels (down to 10−6 M) of anionic surfactants [sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (NaDBS) and dodecylsulfate (NaDDS)] were successfully titrated using 1,3-didecyl-2-methylimidazolium chloride (DMIC) as a standard cationic titrant. The estimated detection limit was 0.03 mg/L using the titrant at a concentration of 0.1 mM. The sensor is used for determination of anionic surfactants in diluted industrial detergent products and industrial effluents. The results obtained agree satisfactorily with the standard extraction-spectrophotometric MBAS method and are comparable with the results obtained using a commercially available surfactant electrode.
