Fabrication of a Screen-Printing Reference Electrode for Potentiometric Measurement

Abstract:

To miniaturize the size of conventional reference electrode and achieve the requirement of cost down and mass-production, a miniaturized all-solid-state Ag/AgCl reference electrode based on a screen-printing technology is presented. This study utilized some polymeric materials to develop a solid protection electrolyte double layer on screen-printing Ag/AgCl electrode and allow the miniaturization of conventional reference electrode structure. According to the experimental results of stability measurements, the miniaturized Ag/AgCl reference electrode presents small potential drift, long lifetime and low sensitivity in various electrolyte solutions. Furthermore, the potentiometric pH sensing measurement which consists of the miniaturized Ag/AgCl reference electrode and a pH indicator shows the linear sensitivity of 58.57 mV/pH. This sensitivity characteristic indicates that the miniaturized Ag/AgCl reference electrode is suitable for the practical application of pH detection.
