Enzyme-Based Detection of Sarin (GB) Using Planar Waveguide Absorbance Spectroscopy

Abstract:

The nerve agent GB also known as sarin is a potentially fatal chemical known to have been used in combat zones and during terrorist attacks. An inexpensive, portable, nerve agent sensor for use by first responders and military personnel is of interest due to the continuing threat of attacks involving chemicals such as GB. Sensors based on cholinesterases have the potential to meet this need as these enzymes are strongly inhibited by organophosphate compounds including nerve agents. Here we demonstrate the application of acetylcholinesterase based detection of GB using planar wave guide absorbance spectroscopy. Detection of levels of GB as low as 100 parts per trillion in solution and 250 picograms in vapor are demonstrated.
