Preparation and Investigation of Ni-Diamond Composite Coatings by Electrodeposition

Abstract:

The coatings have been obtained by electrochemical deposition in a sulfamate bath. The microstructure and crystallization phase are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effect of micro-diamond particles on the mechanism of Ni electrodeposition was studied by using cathodic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and impedance-potential curves in the electrolyte with and without micro-diamond particles. The Ni-diamond composite is investigated for its corrosion behavior in 5 wt% NaOH, 5 wt% NaCl and 5 wt% H2SO4, respectively. The results show that the addition of micro-diamond particles to the plating bath causes the reduction potential of nickel to shift to more negatives and nickel deposition has higher charge transfer resistance. What's more, the presence of micro-diamond particles in composite coating provides better corrosion performance than pure nickel coating in the three kinds of corrosive medium, especially in 5 wt% NaOH solution.
