Effect of Surfactant (Triton X-100) Concentration on Dispersion and Functionalization of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:

Pristine multiwall carbon nanotubes, which generally exist in bundles, are not suitable for applications. In the present study, the multiwall carbon nanotubes have been dispersed by using Triton X-100 surfactant prior to their functionalization. The effect of the concentration of the carbon nano- tubes and the surfactant on the dispersion behavior of carbon nanotubes has been studied. The dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were then functionalized in the different mixtures of nitric, sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. To investigate the effect of dispersion on the functionalization of CNTs, the results have been compared between CNTs functionalized without and with prior disper- sion. The various CNTs functionalized under different conditions have been characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy techniques. In the present study, Triton X-100 with various concentrations has been used for the dispersion of MWCNTs and different chemical routes have been used for their functionalization.
