Abstract:

We report for the first time electron transport measurements of covalently functionalized single-walled-carbon-nanotubes (SWNT) with peptide-nucleic-acid (PNA). Individual SWNT-PNA-SWNT conjugates were tested by aligning them across pre-patterned gold microelectrodes. Corresponding analysis reveal that these conjugates exhibit negative differential resistance (NDR) that is characteristics of resonant tunneling diodes (RTD). The NDR behavior was observed only in SWNT-PNA conjugates and not individually in SWNTs or PNA alone, making them suitable candidates for future molecular electronics. This NDR behavior can be attributed to the type of molecular bonding between peptide and SWNT and alignment of their band energies.
