Abstract:
Measuring deformation and strain in bone provides important information to understand the mechanisms of development and remodeling of cytoskeleton. Although a strain gauge is commonly used to detect the distribution of bone strain, it has to be glued to the measurement site. Therefore, spatial resolution is restricted by the size and the shape of the gauge and it can hardly provide 3D strain data on a surface of bone samples. Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is a full-field non-contact experimental technique that allows rapid and highly accurate measurement of 3D-strain distributions with high resolution. Using ESPI, we measured full-field strains of mouse femurs ex vivo in response to unique mechanical loads applied to the distal epiphysis (knee). The results revealed the characteristic strain pattern along the longitudinal femoral midshaft, which would useful to examine the role of strain in remodeling of cortical and trabecular bones. Keywords: ELECTRONIC SPECKLE PATTERN INTERFEROMETRY; DEFORMATION; STRAIN; BONE
