Numerical Analysis of Channel Plasmon Polaritons Enhanced Optical Antennas

Abstract:

The 2D and 3D electromagnetic analysis of a metallic optical antenna based on a rectangular silver patch with a V-shaped groove in the centre is presented in this paper. Since silver has a complex, frequency-dependent permittivity, the corresponding eigenvalue analysis or resonance is difficult. Additionally, the antenna structure is very small compared to the wavelength, which makes simulations even more demanding from both the accuracy and CPU-time viewpoints. Therefore, three different numerical methods were employed for the electromagnetic field computation and the obtained results are compared. As expected, the boundary-discretization method Multiple Multipole Program (MMP) was faster and more accurate for the 2D analysis than the Finite Element Method (FEM) as a representative of domain-discretization methods. Since 3D MMP leads to large dense matrices, only the vector FEM was applied for this case. As an outcome of the presented numerical results, a promising antenna structure has been suggested. Due to its numerically confirmed 3D field enhancement properties, this antenna might be used for various applications in the area of nanotechnology.
