Abstract:
The spatial organization of 2D mineral staking in the curved (0.9 mm × 0.4 mm) enamel is studied by the position sensitive two dimensional small angle X-ray scattering (2D-SAXS). The radiographic analysis reveals an anisotropic arrangement and relative particle densities of minerals in the enamel. The variation in the fractal dimension at different sites in enamel indicates different orientation of minerals. Also the variation in the crystallite size at different location in the enamel is found using the Guinier equation. Thus 2D-SAXS along with radiography analysis provides the spatial information on size, density, and organization of mineral particles, quantitatively. This study is useful to understand the growth mechanisms of enamel part, specially the 3D curved surface. The 2D SAXS along with radiography can emerge as a useful three dimensional diagnostic tool to assess demineralization or remineralization (formation) of the enamel in vivo or ex vitro as oppose to the AFM which scan only surface. Keywords: ENAMEL; NANO; SPATIAL ORGANIZATION; X-RAY SCATTERING
