Abstract:
Annexin A9 is a recently identified member of the annexin gene family. The products of the evolutionarily related annexin genes are biochemically described by their Ca2+-dependent binding to membrane phospholipids. Annexin A9 is unique within the family, inasmuch as its cDNA-derived protein sequence predicts a loss of high-affinity Ca2+ binding sites. In order to understand the most likely unusual and Ca2+-insensitive role of annexin A9, we analyzed the structure and expression of its gene. We report here on the complete genomic structure of murine annexin A9, showing the presence of an untranslated first exon with unique features, possibly responsible for the low Anx A9 expression levels generally observed. The gene is expressed early in embryonic development and very marginally in specific adult tissues. Such an expression pattern is atypical for most annexins and could be an indication of a specialized function. Keywords: ANNEXIN A9; ANX A9; ANNEXINS; ANNEXIN EXPRESSION
