The DEX-SHL matrices, varying weight ratios from 0.5:10 to 10:10, were prepared by simple co-precipitation technique and then comparatively evaluated for physicochemical properties and drug release in artificial saliva. The results demonstrated that DEX could be completely embedded in the SHL at the weight ratio of 0.5:10 to 3:10 as depicted by the absence of DEX crystals. The finding was supported by the powder X-ray diffractometry. At the weight ratio of 5:10 or more, diffraction peaks of DEX crystal was clearly observed while DEX:SHL at the weight ratios of 0.5:10 to 3:10 demonstrated halo pattern which suggested that DEX was molecularly dispersed in the SHL matrices. In addition, FTIR spectroscopy indicated that DEX might dissolve in the DEX-SHL matrices at the ratios of 3:10 or less since the FTIR peaks was significantly changed as compared to those of intact DEX crystals. For bitterness test, drug release from DEX-SHL in artificial saliva was performed. The decreased drug release was clearly observed when the fraction of SHL in matrices was increased. The drug release was less than 20% for the weight ratios of 5:10 or less while at the weight ratio less than 1:10, the drug release was less than 1%. In conclusion, the taste masking of DEX was easily accomplished through co-precipitation with SHL.", }
