Thin layers of Fe-15Cu-10Al (nominal composition, at.%) coatings deposited by means of magnetron sputtering were oxidized at 973 K and 1073 K in 0.1 Mpa pure O2 for 40 minutes. Oxidation process of the two coatings obeyed the parabolic rate law well (n = 2). The scales of coatings after oxidation at 973 K consisted of three layers. Some degree of internal oxidation of Al was present within the coating layer. However, the scales of coating after oxidation at 1073 K showed different formation with that at 973 K. In addition, the inner layer was very thin and composed of continuous but compact Al oxide. Grain size reduction of the coatings could effectively promote the selective external oxidation of Fe and result in the precipitation of Cu from the supersaturate solid solution.
