Effect of Solidification Mode on Impact Toughness of ENiFe-CI Weld Metal

The objective of this research is to study the effects of solidification mode on impact toughness of the weld metal of nodular cast iron made by SMAW process using two different brands of ENiFe-CI electrodes; namely, A and B. The results show that the ENiFe-CI weld metal brand B gives higher hardness value than the ENiFe-CI weld metal brand A; nonetheless, the weld metal and the interface of ENiFe-CI brand B results in better impact toughness compared with those of ENiFe-CI brand A. This is due to the ENiFe-CI weld metal brand B contains austenite and eutectic ferrite resulting from solidification type AF, while, on the contrary, ENiFe-CI weld metal brand A consists austenite and skeleton ferrite arising from solidification type FA.
