This work investigated the parametric numerical control (NC) program for plate cam machining and online measurement with the combined use of instant center method and custom macro functions in computer numerical control (CNC) machines. The macro commands were introduced into the parametric NC program of cycloid cam profile curves under both machining stage and on-line measurement stage. Instantaneous centering method was employed to analyze and design the program. Practical examples were introduced to validate the cutting work of CNC machine center with regard to plate cam machining. To analyze the accuracy of cam profiles, touch-trigger probes were utilized for on-line measurement with the macro functions. This study demonstrated that the proposed method of plate cam fabrication and online measurement using macro functions and the parametric NC program was practical and advantageous due to its simplicity, flexibility, and high efficiency. In addition to the substantial reduction in time for design computation, the proposed method is believed to be an important advance in cam manufacturing technology.
