Abstract:

Machining slender workpiece still presents a technical challenge. In two different fixturing cases, this paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a slender shaft subjected to cutting forces feeding at constant velocity in single-point turning processes comparatively. The Euler–Bernoulli theory without considering the gyroscopic moment terms and shear deformation is used to model the rotating shaft. The modal analysis method is employed to achieve the dynamic response of the shaft. The derived expression is further nondimensionalized for analytical simplicity and generality. Finally, the influence of the length-to-diameter ratio of workpiece, cutting forces, feed rate as well as fixturing conditions to the dynamics is discussed, respectively. The numerical results are presented and compared between the two fixturing cases. It is found that the chuck-chuck fixture is more advantageous than the chuck-center fixture in slender shaft turning.
