Immobilization of TiO2 and TiO2[Au] Nanoparticles Onto the Poly(4-vinylpyridine) Matrix and Their Photocatalysis
Two different types of bead-shaped efficient/stable heterogeneous nanoparticle photocatalysts were synthesized by immobilization of TiO2 and TiO2–Au nanoparticles individually onto the common insoluble crosslinked poly(styrene)-co-poly(4-vinylpyridine) bead matrix. The first catalyst was prepared by the immobilization of TiO2 on insoluble crosslinked poly(styrene)-co-poly(4-vinylpyridine) beads (P4VP) through a three-step procedure, viz., (i) preparation of crosslinked poly(styrene)-co-poly(4-vinylpyridine) beads, (ii) complexation of TiCl4 with pyridine moiety of P4VP beads and (iii) hydrolysis of TiCl4 and thus obtained PS–P4VP–TiO2NPs. Similarly, the second catalyst, viz., TiO2–Au based bimetallic heterogeneous nanoparticle photocatalyst was prepared by the immobilization of Au NPs onto the P4VP–TiO2 catalyst using HAuCl4 as precursor and followed by reduction in aqueous sodium borohydride solution. These two different heterogeneous nanoparticle photocatalysts viz., PS–P4VP–TiO2NPs and PS–P4VP–TiO2[Au]NPs were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, HRTEM and EDS analyses and proves that the respective nanoparticle photocatalysts were immobilized onto their matrices. The photocatalytic efficiency of these catalysts was examined by conducting the degradation of methyl orange and the obtained results shows excellent activity. The stability and recycle/reusability was also inspected and observed to be good.
