Preparation of Graphite Nanoplatelets by Perchloric Acid Intercalation, Microwave Expansion and Ultrasonic Irradiation

Graphite nanoplatelets were prepared by a new process, i.e., perchloric acid intercalation, microwave expansion and ultrasonic irradiation. The resulting graphite nanoplatelets were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. These graphite nanoplatelets have thicknesses of about 35 nm with different discrete sheet-like morphologies and about eighty layers of carbon monolayer. The interlayer spacing is about 0.432 nm, which is higher than the previous published value of 0.335 nm.
