Well-Ordered Porous Fe3O4 Nanostructures Prepared via Infiltrating Inexpensive Iron Complexes into Polyelectrolyte Shells Coated onto Polystyrene Microspheres

Abstract:

Two types of ordered porous iron oxide structures were prepared by assembling polyelectrolyte-coated polystyrene microspheres loaded with inexpensive iron precursors onto a substrate. Coating the polystyrene microspheres with the polyelectrolyte multilayers was accomplished via the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition method. Subsequent removal of the microspere template created well ordered voids with the oxide skeletons formed from the oxidation of the precursor. Assembly of multilayers of such iron precursor-loaded microspheres through controlled casting of the microspheres leads to a three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous structure. Such a structure is highly desired in many applications where both large surface area and high accessibility for mass transfer are required. Low dimensional assembly of these microsperes by dip coating was found to produce honey comb and chain-like structures. Factors affecting the final structures, such as precursor load, precursor structures, pH of the loaded microsphere colloid and calcination conditions, were investigated. Elemental analysis showed that both structures contain Fe3O4. Magnetization measurements reveal that the final material has a saturation magnetization of 180 and 130 emu g–1 and the remnant magnetization of 95 and 0 emu g–1 at 35 and 300 K, respectively. The magnetic properties suggest that the material is composed of superparamagnetic iron oxide and magnetic iron oxide of a single domain.
