Hepatoprotective Effect of GanKang Granula Against Hepatic Damage in Rats and Mice

GanKang Granula, originally a traditional Chinese medical complex in decoction form, has been employed to treat chronic hepatitis B efficiently for years in China. In this study, we evaluated the toxicological properties and preliminary pharmacodynamic action of GanKang Granula for its further development. We investigated its acute toxicity, long-term toxicity, and effect on liver damage induced by CCl4 and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin plus lipopolysaccharide. The maximum tolerance dose was 20 g/kg in both male and female mice, but the half lethal dose was undetectable. All three levels of GKG experimental groups (13.284, 6.642 and 2.214 g/kg) showed no long-term toxic effect. The experiments carried on injured model indicated that GanKang Granula could reduce damages caused by CCl4 and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin plus lipopolysaccharide. The results proved that GanKang Granula had an efficient hepatoprotective effect and strong immunologic enhancement. In conclusion, GanKang Granula is an efficient hepatoprotective medicine with low toxic side effects.
