METASCHOOL: Training Teachers in the Use of Educational Portals

Abstract:

Schools and classrooms, both real and virtual, must have teachers who are equipped with technology resources and skills and who can effectively teach the necessary subject matter while investing on technology affordances for transforming the content in ways that make it more learnable for students. This need becomes even more evident in the case of school teachers where the existence of interactive learning resources can greatly facilitate the teaching activities within the classroom. Towards this direction, a European initiative (the METASCHOOL Comenius project) has been deployed in an attempt to improve the in-service training of school teachers and ICT staff on topics related to the organisation, sharing, use and re-use of digital learning resources that can be accessed online through learning repositories. This paper presents this new initiative, introduces its aims, and outlines its main objectives and results.
