Phase-coherence in ultracold atoms trapped by double-well potentials is experimentally investigated by taking absorption images of the freely expanding atomic cloud after trap release. We propose a theoretical expression for the spatial density profiles obtained in this way that is based on the standard POVM approach to quantum measurement processes and discuss it with respect to the existing experimental evidence.
