Abstract:
Campbell MR, Mohler SR, Harsch VA, Baisden D. Hubertus Strughold: the “Father of Space Medicine.” Aviat Space Environ Med 2007; 78:716-719. Dr. Hubertus Strughold (1898-1986) is known as the “Father of Space Medicine.” He first coined the term “space medicine” in 1948 and was the first and only Professor of Space Medicine at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. He was a co-founder of the Space Medicine Branch of the Aerospace Medical Association in 1950. In 1963, the Space Medicine Branch initiated the “Hubertus Strughold Award,” which is given each year for the greatest achievement in space medicine.Keywords: History of space medicine; Hubertus Strughold Award; aerospace medicine; Project Paperclip
