Abstract:Weight at menarche of a mixed longitudinal sample of deaf American girls was analysed with regard to its variability and association with their earlier than normal age at menarche. The ‘critical weight' hypothesis of Frisch and Revelle (1970, 1971) specifies the attainment of a certain body weight necessary for the onset of menstruation with a concomitant reduction in its variability. The findings herein suggest this hypothesis is not applicable to deaf girls.
