Abstract:
Although technological, clinical, and legislative advances should be opening new worlds of employment opportunities for people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, these advances have not yet led to higher employment rates. Augmentative Communication Employment Training and Supports (ACETS) is an innovative program designed to increase the employment outcomes for people who use AAC. ACETS aims to support people in reaching their employment goals by providing training and follow-up supports designed to increase their skills, experiences, and social networks related to employment. In this article, we describe an intervention involving the ACETS program and discuss the positive outcomes that appear to result from this program, including an increase in the employment of participants and increased employment-related skills and experiences. Keywords: AAC; Complex communication needs; Employment
