Abstract:

Preamble: Emmanuel Desurvire, Editor of Optical Fiber Technology, is an old friend, dating from 1986 when he joined my department (Photonic Networks and Components Research) at AT&T Bell Labs. He began his research on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers almost immediately. It was the first such work at Bell Labs, and not long afterward helped spark the worldwide revolution in amplified lightwave systems and wavelength division multiplexing.

Recently, Emmanuel suggested that I write a short essay on any topic for each issue of OFT. He proposed that I start with some recollections of the early years of lightwave research at Bell Labs. Although I am aware that reminiscences can become tiresome, I agreed to make the attempt with the hope that there may be some lessons to learn. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
