Abstract:

Grinding bowls from the Gas Factory workshop and pieces found in the civilian town of Roman Aquincum were sampled and analysed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The basic goals of this investigation were: (1) to make a chemical characterization of the workshop material so as to establish a reference group, and (2) to determine whether the grinding bowl finds of the civilian town were made in this local firm or not. The authentic kiln material proved to be appropriate to set up a Gas Factory reference group for a given time-period of the activity of this workshop. Pieces from other Aquincum firms can be separated from this group with great certainty. Analyses show that the largest part of the mortaria finds in the civilian town were not produced in this local workshop. It is supposed that the quality of these wares did not meet the claims of the citizens. Copyright 1999 Academic Press
