After a review of data from a single-laboratory validation (SLV) study published in the International Dairy Journal 21, 783–789 (2011), a method for folate in infant formula and adult/pediatric nutritional formula was submitted for consideration of adoption by AOAC as an
automated assay that is rapid and simple. The method uses an optical biosensor assay to quantitate total folate content in milk and milk-based pediatric and adult nutritional products. The assay uses folate binding protein and a functionalized sensor surface. The SLV showed an instrumental
LOD of 0.1 ng/mL (equivalent to 2.5 μg/100 g for a typical infant formula). The method detection limit was 6.5 μg/100 g with a repeatability of 3.48% and an intermediate reproducibility of 4.63% RSD.
The Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL publishes refereed papers and reviews in the fields of chemical, biological and toxicological analytical chemistry for the purpose of showcasing the most precise, accurate and sensitive methods for analysis of foods, food additives, supplements and contaminants, cosmetics, drugs, toxins, hazardous substances, pesticides, feeds, fertilizers and the environment available at that point in time. The scope of the Journal includes unpublished original research describing new analytical methods, techniques and applications; improved approaches to sampling, both in the field and the laboratory; better methods of preparing samples for analysis; collaborative studies substantiating the performance of a given method; statistical techniques for evaluating data. The Journal will also publish other articles of general interest to its audience, e.g., technical communications; cautionary notes; comments on techniques, apparatus, and reagents.
