There is a protean body of scientific literature available on global warming and climate change, on modelling techniques for estimating heat island and related effects in urban areas and on the design of more environmentally sustainable buildings. But the planning knowledge on climate change and its implications for human settlement is just emerging. This paper examines the state of planning knowledge in the area of climate change and urban settlement and seeks to assist planners in responding to climate change.
