Abstract:

If travel distances, traffic congestion and traffic pollutions are to be reduced there must be coordination between transportation, housing and land-use programmes. Urban development should be managed so as to reduce future traffic loads and promote growth travel efficiencies. Here using California – and particularly the San Francisco Bay Area – as a case study, policy initiatives to achieve this are discussed.
