Technical Note: Exploratory Investigation of Time‐Finite‐Element and Fast‐Floquet Methods for Trim and Stability Analysis

A numerical technique based on combining time‐finite‐element and fast‐Floquet methods is presented for linearized perturbation equations about the steady‐state solution. Numerical results for a two‐bladed horizontal‐axis wind turbine show that this combination reduces the number of equations and unknowns in the discretized equations, thus leading to a reduction in computational effort for finding the Floquet transition matrix. Because the approach leads to an improvement over a straightforward use of time‐finite elements for wind‐turbine problems, a similar level of improvement may be expected for rotorcraft problems.
