Abstract:

The “ground‐effect‐machine” (GEM) — a device which would operate in ground effect throughout its entire flight — is currently receiving considerable attention. The analyses published to date indicate that the augmentation ratio due to ground effect approaches infinity as the height‐to‐diameter ratio approaches zero. Because of this, considerable interest has been stimulated in the very low height‐to‐diameter ratio region, and augmentation ratios of “several hundredfold” have been suggested in the literature as practical values.
