This paper compares the performance and operating characteristics of four turbine‐powered VTOL aircraft designs which lie between the helicopter and the direct‐lift jet airplane in the VTOL aircraft spectrum. The example aircraft have a range of disc loadings from 10 to 160 lbs/sq ft, and are designed to be capable of hovering out of ground effect at 5000 ft altitude and 95°F air temperature. Both fixed‐wing and tilt‐wing VTOL types are included.
