Abstract:

This article is the text from the The Sir John Barry Memorial Lecture that was given by Paul Wiles, Director of Research for the Home Office in the United Kingdom. The article discusses whether criminology is a public good or a private interest. The author's experiences in the UK are used to illustrate the argument that criminology should work with and against government in pursuit of the "good society" .
