Open Access Determination of Microbiological Contamination During Long-Term Storage of Sanitized Equipment

Keeping stored animal racks and cages in clean condition to avoid resanitization prior to use is a never-ending dilemma. A goal of every animal treatment facility is to provide quick replacement of dirty/contaminated racks and/or cages. In most good laboratory practice testing facilities, it is often thought that racks and cages stored for 2 or more weeks must be sanitized prior to being placed into service. By culturing the equipment under our storage conditions, it was determined that the racks and cages can be stored for a period of up to 6 months without detection of potentially harmful microorganisms.
