A survey instrument, developed with the help of experts in the field and consisting of 29 items, was sent to 400 randomly selected principals. The results revealed the schools' hiring practices, policies, and procedures in terms of the treatment of solicited and unsolicited applications; the advertisement of vacancies; the use of search and screen committees; the importance of job references; the interview process; how applicants are kept up to date relative to their applications; the number of years of prior experience granted to new hires; preferences for experienced or inexperienced candidates; preferences for a graduate degree and for swimming certification of candidates; and whether principals preferred candidates who are willing and able to coach one or more sports.", pages = "1-58", url = "http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/aahperd/joperd/2007/00000078/00000001/art00011" }
